GVSU's Wheeler named GLIAC Men's Golf Player of the Year; all-conference teams revealed

GLIAC -- Grand Valley State's Bryce Wheeler has been named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Player of the Year. Wheeler is the fifth-straight Laker to earn the honor.

Ferris State's Ethan Frost was recognized as GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

Grand Valley State head coach Gareth Lappin, in his third season at the helm of the Lakers' program, received conference coach of the year.

2026 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Bryce Wheeler, Grand Valley State
For the fifth straight season, a Grand Valley State men’s golfer has been named GLIAC Golfer of the Year, with Bryce Wheeler taking home the honors this year. The senior put together the best season of his career, recording six top 10 finishes, including wins at the UIndy Invitational, the Greenwood Invitational, and co-medalist honors at the GLIAC Championship. He carded 18 rounds of par or better, shooting a low round of 64. He sank 119 birdies and five eagles this year, shooting an average round of 70.9. The First-Team All-GLIAC selection is currently ranked 26th in the country. 
2026 GLIAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Ethan Frost, Ferris State
Ferris State University freshman standout Ethan Frost had a big rookie campaign for the Bulldogs, helping FSU to the NCAA Division II Regional Championships. Frost placed among the top 50 golfers at the regional event held on FSU's own Katke Golf Course as the Bulldogs placed tied for fifth overall and were only a stroke away from advancing to the D2 National Championships. He also helped Ferris State to a third-place performance at the GLIAC Championships while placing tied for 13th individually with a 214 score for the three rounds of action. This year, Frost finished among the top 50 golfers in 10 tournaments, including four top-20 efforts.
2026 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Gareth Lappin, Wayne State
Grand Valley State head coach Gareth Lappin has been named GLIAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. In his third season at the helm in Allendale, Lappin has led the Lakers to one of their most successful seasons in program history. The Lakers won seven tournaments, including the GLIAC and Regional titles. They placed second at two other events as well. Under Lappin, six players earned First-Team All-Conference honors, with Bryce Wheeler earning Golfer of the Year. The Lakers are ranked fifth in the country as they head into next week’s National Championships.
