GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its first weekly awards of the spring season for conference men's and women's golf teams. Davenport junior Cayden Kwan and Saginaw Valley State sophomore Marissa GeRue received recognition.
MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Cayden Kwan, Davenport
Cayden Kwan of the Davenport University men’s golf team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Golfer of the Week. This weekend (March 14-15), Kwan helped lead the Panthers to a third place finish out of 14 teams. Individually, Kwan ended with a second-place finish, ending the event shooting 216 (E). His best round was in the second, shooting three under par (69). Kwan secured 11 birdies through 54 holes of action. It is the second time this year he has earned the award and third time this season a Panther has been named golfer of the week by the GLIAC. Looking ahead, Kwan and the Panthers will travel to Bolingbrook, Ill., for the Lewis Flyer Spring Invite on March 30-31 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.
WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Marissa GeRue, Saginaw Valley State
Marissa GeRue set the 18- and 54-hole record for Saginaw Valley as she won the SVSU Spring Invitational over the weekend. The sophomore finished the three-round tournament at 224 (+8) after back-to-back 78’s (+6) on day one and then a 68 (-4) on Sunday. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native carded eight birdies in the final round for nine total to lead the tournament which was more than double than the other 37 golfers. She led the tournament on par fours with an average of 4.07 strokes per hole and was second-best on par fives with 5.25 strokes per hole.
