GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the second week of fall competition for conference men's and women's golf teams. Ferris State sophomore McCoy Biagioli and Wayne State freshman Claudia Portillo were named GLIAC Golfers of the Week.
MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: McCoy Biagioli, Ferris State
Ferris State University sophomore golfer McCoy Biagioli led the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish at the UIndy Fall Invitational, which took place on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 23-24) at the Broadmoor Country Club in Indiana. Biagioli placed tied for fifth overall at nine-under par for the three rounds. He shot a 207 figure on rounds of 73 and 70 on Monday before firing an impressive eight-under par 64 in the last round. The Bulldogs finished with a 833 total at 31 strokes under par for the 54 holes of action, finishing only four shots behind team champion Missouri S&T (829) in the nine-team field.
WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Claudia Portillo, Wayne State
Freshman Claudia Portillo won the inaugural Warrior Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for the first individual title of her career. Playing in a field of 51 student-athletes at Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Mich., the rookie carded a two-round score of 148 (+4, 72-76). Portillo led Wayne State to the Team Championship, the program's first of the year and earliest in a season since Sept. 22-23 of 2018 at Ohio Dominican's Cumberland Trail Classic. In three events so far this season, the native of Spain has tied-for-12th, been the runner-up and finished in first, all while averaging a 74.3 through seven holes.
