GLIAC announces 2022 men's soccer postseason awards

GLIAC – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the men's soccer postseason awards for fall 2022, as voted on by the league's coaches.

Saginaw Valley State sophomore forward Jonathan Monney (Kitchener, Ont.) was honored as the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year. Monney led the dynamic SVSU offense in his first season after transferring from Contestoga College. The sophomore scored 15 goals and added four assists for the Cardinals. He netted six game-winning goals for SVSU, which enters the GLIAC Postseason Tournament unbeaten with a record of 12-0-4. The native of Kitchener, Ont., led the GLIAC in goals and was second in assists in 2022. Nationally, Monney ranked sixth in total goals scored this season. Monney dominated the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Awards this season, winning four times, including three in-a-row in September.

Saginaw Valley State sophomore back Benjamin Adamson (Hull, England) is the 2022 GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Adamson led the SVSU defense all season, starting in all 16 games for the Cardinals on the backline. The sophomore from Hull, England, added three goals on just five shots this season as he continued to be a threat to score on set pieces all season. The SVSU defense was stifling all season, surrendering 17 goals in 16 games. The Cardinals had six shutouts, including a run of four straight games without allow a goal in the middle of the season. Adamson is now a three-time All-GLIAC Honoree (two first team awards, one second team).

Parkside junior goalkeeper Robin Hermann (Kirchheim unter Teck, Germany) earned GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year recognition. Hermann has been a defensive nightmare for opponents all season long. In 16 starts, Hermann led the conference in goals against average (0.639), save percentage (0.829), and shutouts (8). He ended the season with 48 saves and averaged 3.00 saves per game. Hermann helped lead the Rangers to a 10-2-4 overall record and was GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. He is also the second straight Parkside goalkeeper to receive this award, following Alexandre Durand in 2021.

GLIAC Freshman of the Year was awarded to Northern Michigan forward Tommaso Lami (Bologna, Italy), who was an essential recruit for head coach Alex Fatovic and made an immediate impact on Northern Michigan's program in his first season. Lami's eight goals and 19 points are each top three marks in the conference and the best totals for freshmen. Lami played and started in all but one game for Northern Michigan.

Louis Barrow of Saginaw Valley State was selected as GLIAC Coach of the Year. Barrow led the Cardinals to their first unbeaten regular season in program history with a mark of 12-0-4 overall and 9-0-3 in the GLIAC. In four seasons as the head coach of the Cardinals, Barrow is 43-12-10 overall. This season, the Cardinals led the GLIAC in goals scored with 40 and were second in the league allowing just 17. The Cardinals also had the highest shot percentage in the conference at .194. The GLIAC Coach of the Year award is the second for Barrow.
