BAY CITY, Mich. --
Tiffin University's freshman forward Ashton Campbell
(Luton, England) was named the 2008 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's soccer "Offensive
Player of the Year," while Ashland University senior defender
Luke Brookfield (Ormskirk, England) was named
"Defensive Player of the Year" in balloting conducted by the
league's coaches.
Northwood Univerity forward
Keith Lough (Edinburgh, Scotland) was honored with
the league's "Freshman of the Year" award, and John
Hall, who guided the Ashland to the 2008 GLIAC
regualr-season title, earned "Coach of the Year" accolades.
Campbell has led the offense
for the Dragons of Tiffin University for most of the season. He has
tallied five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points, while
starting all 17 matches this season. He currently leads Tiffin and
ranks second in the GLIAC in shots taken (53), while leading the
Dragons in shots on goal (30).
Brookfield has started 17 of
Ashland's 19 games, solidifying the defense for the Eagles in his
first season with AU. He has led a team that has outscored its
opponents, 43-27. The AU defense is only allowing 1.37 goals per
game, and most of that is attributed to Brookfield's ability to
guard his side of the field. In comparison, AU gave up 56 goals
last season for an average of 3.05 goals per game. He also has one
assist on the season.
Lough became a force for the
Timberwolves in his first year with the program. He currently
ranks sixth in the conference in points, averaging 1.0 per
game. Lough also ranks among the GLIAC leaders in assists
(sixth - five), goals (ninth - five), game-winning goals (fifth -
two) and shots (ninth - 2.0 per game). He saved his best
performance of the season for the Timberwolves' match against No. 6
Ashland, netting a second-half hat trick to lead Northwood to a 3-1
victory over the Eagles. He is the first player in Northwood
men's soccer history to earn the GLIAC "Freshman of the Year"
award.
Hall, in his eighth season as
AU's men's soccer head coach, holds the career record for wins by a
coach at Ashland. The 15-2-2 mark the Eagles put up this season is
the most wins an Ashland men's team has ever had. Hall's all-time
record at AU is 76-54-11, having twice coached the Eagles men's
team to the NCAA Division II playoffs. He has also won one previous
GLIAC championship and one GLIAC "Coach of the Year" honor (2005).
Joining Campbell and Brookfield on the All-GLIAC
first team are: junior forward Tony Iyayi and sophomore goalkeeper
Jeff Frisch of Tiffin; junior forwards Adam Spannbauer and Ross
Ashley, senior midfielder James Livingston, junior midfielder Tom
Mangotic, and senior defender Aaron Favri of Ashland; junior
forward Ross Aitchison and freshman defender Frederic Schloezel of
Northwood University.
