GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the ninth week of competition of the 2024-25 swimming & diving season. Selected for honors were Saginaw Valley State senior Benjamin Wainman (men's swimming), Wayne State grad student Barbara Munoz (women's swimming), Wayne State sophomore Max Wasiniak (men's diving) and Wayne State sophomore Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru (women's diving).
MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Benjamin Wainman, Saginaw Valley State
Saginaw Valley State University senior Benjamin Wainman took first in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles at Wayne State this weekend with times of 4:38.00 and 9:24.42. Wainman helped the No. 14 Cardinals to a 129-114 win over the No. 21 Warriors. This is the fourth Athlete of the Week award for Saginaw Valley swim and dive in the 2024-25 season and the fourth for Wainman. It is the fifth in his career.
WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Barbara Munoz, Wayne State
Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia / Comfandi Yumbo) was named GLIAC Female Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season and fourth time in her career on Tuesday. This past Saturday when hosting Saginaw Valley State, Munoz touched the wall first in a pair of events including the 200 free (1:55.07) and 100 fly (59.11). Those two victories helped lead Wayne State to a 141-97 victory over the Cardinals.
MEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Max Wasiniak, Wayne State
Max Wasiniak (Huron, Ohio) is now a three-time winner of GLIAC Male Diver of the Week accolades, the first two of which came last season as a freshman. While facing 14th-ranked Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Wasiniak stood atop the podium for the one-meter board (281.55) and placed second at three meters (276.75).
WOMEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru, Wayne State
Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) takes home GLIAC Female Diver of the Week honors for the third time in her career, all three of which have happened this season. On Saturday at home against Saginaw Valley State, Wadsworth-Curcuru won on both boards including 250.88 at one meter and 230.63 at three meters. Those two first-place finishes helped lead Wayne State to a 141-97 triumph against the Cardinals.
