GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the fourth week of competition of the 2024-25 swimming & diving season. Awards were presented to Grand Valley State junior Lucy Hedley (women's swimming), junior Carter Wood (men's diver) and sophomore Sadie Huizenga (women's diver) in addition to Saginaw Valley State senior Benjamin Wainman (men's swimming).
MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Benjamin Wainman, Saginaw Valley State
Saginaw Valley State University senior Benjamin Wainman took first place in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle on Saturday against Northern Michigan and Grand Valley State with times of 4:33.15 and 9:14.71. Both of the marks being NCAA DII B Cut times and the mark of 9:14.71 in the 1000-yard freestyle set the NMU pool record at the PEIF Pool. This is the second Athlete of the Week award for Saginaw Valley swim and dive in the 2024-25 season and the second for Wainman. It is the third of his career earning one on October 8 this year and one in the final week of the 2023-24 season.
WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Lucy Hedley, Grand Valley State
Junior Lucy Hedley was named GLIAC Swimmer of the Week for the second week in a row. She led the Lakers last Saturday in 3 events against Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley. She broke two pool records at PEIF Pool. She first competed in the 200 yard free with a time of 1:48.26 and was a member of the 400 free relay that touched the wall at 3:28.08 to secure the new pool records. Hedley also had a time of 23.55 in the 50 yard free to take first place.
MEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Carter Wood, Grand Valley State
Junior Carter Wood was named Diver of the Week for Grand Valley State after competing in a Tri-Meet against Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State University. Wood competed in the 1 mtr. Dive with a score of 468.05 to take first place. He also took second place in the 3 mtr. Dive with a score of 259.65.
WOMEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Sadie Huizenga, Grand Valley State
Sophomore Sadie Huizenga was named Diver of the Week by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Huizenga competed in the 1 mtr. Dive on Saturday against Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley. She recorded a score of 400.80 to take second. Huizenga also competed in the 3 mtr. Dive to take first place with a score of 230.40.
