2023 All-GLIAC Baseball teams and postseason awards announced

LANSING, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2023 All-GLIAC Baseball Teams and postseason awards in conjunction with the conference's annual tournament, held this year at the Jackson Field in Lansing, Mich. The awards were voted on by the conference baseball coaches.

Rudy Ramirez, from the GLIAC regular season champion Wayne State Warriors, earned player of the year honors while WSU's Karter Fitzpatrick was selected as pitcher of the year. Another Warrior, Tony Hatzigeorgiou, received the GLIAC Freshman Player of the Year award.

Tyler McKinstry of Davenport was named GLIAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year.

Wayne State skipper Ryan Kelley was honored as GLIAC Coach of the Year for leading the Warriors to a first-place conference finish and the regular season crown.

Ryan Szlachcic of Wayne State is the 2023 recipient of the Troy Berry Award. The honor, named for the University of Findlay head baseball coach, is presented annually to the GLIAC baseball player who best combines outstanding character and leadership on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Wayne State all conference teams with six first-team selections followed by Grand Valley State and Davenport with three each.

2023 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Rudy Ramirez, Wayne State
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) is Wayne State's first GLIAC Player of the Year since catcher, Brad Guenther, in 2013 and the sixth in program history. Ramirez started all 48 of Wayne State's games in left field and finished with a .384 batting average (66-for-172). That clip was good for second in the league while his .423 conference average (47-for-111) was the best. The six-foot slugger also finished first in the league in runs scored (53), doubles (17), and RBI (58), second in total bases (107), sacrifice flies (6), and slugging percentage (.622), third in hits (66), and fifth in both home runs (6) and stolen bases (15-for-16).

2023 GLIAC PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Karter Fitzpatrick, Wayne State
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich.) is the third Wayne State hurler to garner GLIAC Pitcher of the Year honors in the last four times it's been awarded joining Ryan Korolden (2022) and Hunter Brown (2019) as well as the fifth overall. The 6-5 right-hander's 2.15 ERA was good for second in the conference and came thanks in part to a league-leading seven complete games. Fitzpatrick struck out 63 batters and walked just 12 in his 67 innings pitched with a .243 batting average against. He pitched two shutouts, at PNW on April 2 and vs. DU on May 6, and gave up just three earned runs in his final 21 innings pitched of the regular season.

2023 GLIAC FRESHMAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Tony Hatzigeorgiou, Wayne State
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) is the school's first GLIAC Freshman Player of the Year since Hunter DeLanoy in 2019 and fifth since it was first awarded in 1992. The distinction comes after Hatzigeorgiou finished the regular season 7-for-11 (.636 batting average), was given the final GLIAC Player of the Week honor of 2023 and raised his season average above the .300 mark at .315 (41-for-130). In just league games, the 5-11 rookie hit .333 (26-for-78) while appearing as both a third baseman and designated hitter.

2023 GLIAC FRESHMAN PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Tyler McKinstry, Davenport
Tyler McKinstry provided much needed innings late in the season due to injuries. He started in four GLIAC games and had a 1-1 record with a 6.75 ERA in 16 innings. He walked eight and struck out 20. He picked up his GLIAC win against Parkside on April 23 with five innings of work and struck out seven Rangers.

2023 TROY BERRY AWARD
Ryan Szlachcic, Wayne State
Szlachcic is the head volunteer and liaison for WSU baseball for the Detroit Tigers Kids Club. 2023 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Ryan Kelley, Wayne State
Ryan Kelley has been named GLIAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, the other being in 2010, after guiding his program to the GLIAC Regular Season Championship. The 15th-year skipper joins Angelo Gust (1980-82) and Jay Alexander (2005, 08) as Wayne State head coaches to receive the honor multiple times. Kelley's second honor comes after leading the Warriors to 38 wins (38-10), the most in program history passing the previous mark of 37 set just last season.
