Ashland's Jacob Petkac and Andrew Meyer Named 2009 GLIAC Baseball "Player" and "Pitcher of the Year"

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio Ashland University
junior third baseman Jacob Petkac (Middleburg Heights,
Ohio/Midpark) was named the 2009 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball "Player of
Year," while teammate junior Andrew Meyer (Hamler,
Ohio) was named "Pitcher of the Year" by the league's
baseball coaches in conjunction with all-conference balloting.
Grand Valley State University rookie outfielder Cody
Grice (Lansing, Mich./DeWitt) was tabbed "Freshman of the
Year," while Ashland skipper John Schaly earned
"Coach of the Year" honors.
Petkac helped the Eagles post a 26-5-1 GLIAC record (41-11-1)
this season and earn the league's regular season title. He leads
the GLIAC in runs scored (57), while placing fourth in batting
average (.401), third in slugging percentage (.593), third in
on-base percentage (.488), fourth in hits (69), and tied for first
in runs-batted-in (53).
Meyer, who has posted a 9-1 mark this spring, leads the GLIAC in
innings pitched (89.1) and strikeouts (69), while ranking fifth in
opponents batting average (.265), sixth in earned run average
(.343).
Grice helped the Lakers earn the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC
tournament after going 20-11-1 in league play and 38-13-1
overall. He currently leads the GLIAC in slugging percentage
(.642) and on-base percentage (.519), while placing second in
batting average (.448), and tenth in hits (60).
Schaly guided Ashland to the GLIAC's regualr season title and a
No. 4 ranking in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) Division II poll. Now in his 12th season
at the Eagle helm, Schaly earns his fifth GLIAC "Coach of the Year"
award. He has won 40 or more games seven times with the
Eagles, posting a record of 481-204-1 at AU. His career record as a
collegiate head coach is 844-422-1 in 22 years. At AU, Schaly has
averaged 40 wins per season.
