WSU's Wasner and Szpkowska garner GLIAC tennis athletes of the week honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the 10th week of the 2026 tennis spring season. Wayne State swept the awards, with sophomore Tom Wasner and senior Martyna Szpkowska receiving recognition. 

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tom Wasner, Wayne State
Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) of the Wayne State University men's tennis squad garners his first GLIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor after going undefeated in doubles and singles against #15-Uindy and Michigan Tech.  The sophomore was the only WSU student-athlete to post a singles win against the Greyhounds, as he tallied a 6-2, 6-1 triumph in the No. 5 position after he earned a 6-2 doubles victory with Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium).  In the 7-0 sweep over the Huskies, Wasner and Hill notched a 6-2 doubles victory before the Warrior posted a 6-1, 6-2 win in singles.
WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Martyna Szpkowska, Wayne State
Wayne State University women's tennis student-athlete Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) earns GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week recognition after helping the team to a pair of wins over UIndy and Michigan Tech.  In the 5-2 win over the Greyhounds, she posted a 6-4, 6-4 win in the second singles flight, while notching a 6-4 triumph in the top doubles position with partner Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School).  During the 7-0 sweep over MTU, Szpakowska collected a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles slot, while winning 6-1 in doubles with Beaulieu.
