Parkside's Johnson and SVSU's Depew earn top softball honors; All-GLIAC teams announced

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2024 All-GLIAC Softball Teams and postseason awards on Wednesday, one day prior to the start of the GLIAC Softball Tournament in Rosemont, Ill. The awards were voted on by the conference softball coaches.

Parkside's Mia Johnson was named GLIAC Player of the Year and Saginaw Valley State's Emily Depew was honored as pitcher of the year. Ferris State's Alexis Kozlowski received GLIAC Freshman of the Year recognition.

SVSU's Ryan Schalk was selected as GLIAC Coach of the Year, after leading the Cardinals to a share of the regular season title and 30 wins, including 16 in conference play.

2024 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Mia Johnson, Parkside

Rangers third baseman Mia Johnson has been selected as the 2024 GLIAC Softball Player of the Year. Johnson has been on a tear in her sophomore campaign. Now a two team GLIAC First Teamer, she leads the Rangers in batting average, swinging at .387. That mark is also good enough to rank fourth in the GLIAC. She has collected 27 extra base hits this season, including eight homeruns, a mark that currently has her tied for second in the GLIAC. Her eight long balls are also a new career high for the South Milwaukee native. In fact, Johnson has set new career highs in every statistical hitting category this season. In the field Johnson has been a vacuum, accumulating 81 putouts and having just one error while appearing in all 49 contests for Parkside.

2024 GLIAC PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Emily Depew, Saginaw Valley State

Emily Depew is the second SVSU pitcher to earn GLIAC Pitcher of the Year, the first being Jade Fulton in 2011. She finished the regular season with an 18-6 record and maintained a 2.02 ERA and a WHIP of 1.09, finishing top-10 in the GLIAC in those categories. Depew was dominant at the plate, striking out a conference-best 161 batters this season, a total that ranks 41st in NCAA Division II. The four-time All-GLIAC First-Team selection reached double-digit strikeouts three times this season and registered her fourth no hitter of her career in the 8-0 win over Ferris State on the last day of the regular season. Depew is the only Cardinal pitcher to achieve four career no hitters and is just one of two SVSU pitchers to have reached 600 career strikeouts. The Lowell, Michigan, native sits in the top-50 in the nation in complete games (49th), shutouts (25th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (43rd), strikeouts, and victories (35th).

2024 GLIAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Alexis Kozlowski, Ferris State

Ferris State University freshman first baseman Alexis Kozlowski has had a stellar rookie campaign, leading the Bulldogs to a top-four finish in the GLIAC and a spot in the conference tournament. Kozlowski has hit a team-leading .377 overall this year with a squad-best 60 hits and 47 RBI's to go with 19 doubles, six triples and six home runs in 49 games. Additionally, she's scored 25 runs and recorded a .686 slugging percentage and .415 on-base figure. The Gaylord native leads the conference with 19 doubles and six triples while ranking second in both hits and RBI's this year. She's also listed among the league's top 10 performers in batting average and home runs. Overall, Kozlowski has also recorded two hits or more in 23 outings this season and totaled 31 extra-base hits while accounting for 109 total bases.

2024 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Ryan Schalk, Saginaw Valley State

Ryan Schalk was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. He led the Cardinals to a share of the GLIAC Regular Season Championship (the first regular season title since 2009) in just his second season and coached GLIAC Pitcher of the Year Emily Depew. SVSU recorded a third consecutive 30-win season with a 30-19 overall mark and a 16-8 conference record at the conclusion of the 2024 regular Season. The Cardinals won their second-consecutive GLIAC Tournament Championship last season and enter this year’s tournament as the No. 2 seed. This year’s Cardinal softball team leads the league in home runs, RBI, walks, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. SVSU pitchers led the GLIAC with 305 strikeouts and a K/7 mark of 6.56 heading into the GLIAC tournament.
