GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 5 of the 2024 men's soccer season. St. Cloud State swept the awards, with senior midfielder Philip Caputo earning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week recognition and senior goalkeeper Ramy Atia claiming GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Philip Caputo, St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State senior midfielder Philip Caputo continued his offensive dominance this past week as he helped lead the Huskies to another undefeated weekend with a 2-0 win over Northern Michigan on Wednesday and a 1-0 win against Roosevelt on Friday. Caputo tallied his third multi-goal game of the season after scoring twice against Northern Michigan. The senior standout attacked the Wildcat defense in their box where he would draw a penalty, setting up a penalty kick. Caputo knocked in the penalty kick in the 28th minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The midfielder iced the game in the 81st minute as he launched a missile from the midline which flew past the Wildcat keeper and cashed in the net for his second goal of the game. Friday’s game against Roosevelt saw Caputo record a team-high three shots on goal. For the week, Caputo finished second in the conference in points with four and finished tied for first in goals with two while recording five shots on goal. This is the third Player of the Week honor for Caputo this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ramy Atia, St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State senior goalkeeper Ramy Atia was flawless in the Huskies undefeated weekend. In the 2-0 victory against Northern Michigan, Atia recorded his second shutout of the year while recording three saves. The senior also made a huge save on a Wildcat penalty kick in the 61st minute. Friday’s game against Roosevelt saw Atia tally his third consecutive shutout while recording a season-high of six saves. For the week, Atia led the conference in save percentage (1.00), goals against average (0.00), and shutouts (2) while finishing second in saves (9). This is the second Player of the Week honor for Atia this season.
