SVSU's Beaubien and WSU Hanes Named 2009 GLIAC Softball "Player" and "Pitcher of the Year," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich.-- Saginaw Valley State University senior
outfielder Marsha Beaubien (Alpena, Mich.) and
Wayne State University junior pitcher Casey Hanes
(Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) were named the 2009 Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball "Player"
and "Pitcher of the Year," respectively.
Ashland University rookie pitcher Emlyn Knerem
(Brunswick, Ohio) was tabbed "Freshman of the Year" by the
leagues head coaches, while AU skipper Sheilah Gulas earned "Coach
of the Year" honors.
Beaubien helped the Cardinals earn the No. 2
seed in the GLIAC tournament this season by leading the league in
batting average (.416), slugging percentage (.728), on-base
percentage (.482), runs scored (41), total bases (91) and stolen
bases (35).
Hanes was the leading catalyst on the mound for
the Warriors, posting a 24-5 record while leading WSU to the No. 4
seed in the GLIAC tournament. She led the GLIAC in wins (24),
innings pitched (207), strikeouts (231), appearances (36), games
started (26), shutouts (11), complete games (24), and opponents
batting average (.166). Hanes was also second in the league with
four saves.
Knerem helped the Eagles to the 2009 regular
season championship, appearing in 25 games for Ashland inside
the circle. Knerem was second in the league in
strikeouts with 215, second in shutouts with seven, third in
the GLIAC with 16 wins, and fourth in innings pitched (152.1)
and complete games. Opponents hit at just a .192 clip
against Knerem for the 2009 regular season campaign.
Gulas guided Ashland to a 22-4 record in
conference play to claim the 2009 GLIAC Softball Regular Season
Title. The Eagles were 34-10 overall and carried the No. 1
seed into the 2009 GLIAC Softball Championship.
