ALLENDALE, Mich.-- Grand Valley State claimed the 2009 GLIAC Women's Championship Monday at the Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. The Lakers carded a 36-hole score of 615 (+39), followed by Ashland's 640 (+64) and Ferris State's 645 (+69). The title was the Lakers second straight and fifth overall since the tournament started in 2001. In addition, GVSU sophomore Kristina Langton (Ada, Mich./Catholic Central) earned medalist honors with a two-over-par 146. The 2009 GLIAC Championship consisted of 36 holes Monday due to rain on Sunday.

GVSU took control in the team standings midway through the windy first round and carded a 318. The Lakers pulled away with a final round score of 297. Langton shot an opening 18 75 (+3), followed by a -1 71 in round two for a 36-hole total of 146 (+2). Junior Ashley Smith (Plymouth, Mich./Salen) finished tied for third after shooting a 155. Smith opened with an 80, but carded a final round 75 (+3). Freshman Sarah Hoffman (Saline, Mich.) shot an opening 18 83, but regrouped with a +1 73 final round for a 36-hole score of 156 to finish fifth.

Sophomore Allie Tyler (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) finished sixth with a 158 (80-78), while junior Caitlin Bennett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) was the fifth Laker in the top nine with a 162 (84-78). Smith was named the GLIAC Most Valuable Golf in 2009, while Langton, Smith and Tyler all earned First-Team All-GLIAC honors. Bennett and Hoffman garnered Second-Team All-GLIAC plaudits.
