Parkside's Johnson and SVSU's Irelan earn top softball honors; All-GLIAC teams announced

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2025 All-GLIAC Softball Teams and postseason awards on Wednesday, one day prior to the start of the GLIAC Softball Tournament in Rosemont, Ill. The awards were voted on by the conference softball coaches.

Parkside junior third baseman Mia Johnson was named GLIAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Saginaw Valley State's Macy Irelan was honored as pitcher of the year. Grand Valley State outfielder Madelynn Pope received GLIAC Freshman of the Year recognition.

SVSU's Ryan Schalk repeated as GLIAC Coach of the Year, after leading the Cardinals to the 2025 regular season title and 40 wins, including 23 in conference play.

2025 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Mia Johnson, Parkside
Mia Johnson has been selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Johnson helped the Rangers to their best conference finish since joining the GLIAC back in the 2019 season. At the plate, Johnson was undeniable racking a league leading 17 home runs on the year, with over half (13) coming in GLIAC play. Her 17 home runs put her 6th in the GLIAC single season record book, and second in program history for the Rangers. During her long ball tear Johnson recorded five games with multiple home runs, including a three-home run game against Wayne State back on March 29th. With that, Johnson carried an insane 1.370 OPS with a .862 SLG and .508 OBS, all new career highs for the junior. The South Milwaukee native also posted new career highs in runs (48) and walks (38). While batting in the lead off spot for the Rangers for the entirety of the year, Johnson still accounted for 42 RBIs this season.
2025 GLIAC PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Macy Irelan, Saginaw Valley State
Macy Irelan is the second-consecutive Cardinal to be named GLIAC Pitcher of the Year and the third SVSU pitcher overall to receive the honor. She finished the regular season with a 17-3 record. Irelan became the first Cardinal pitcher to throw two no-hitters in a single season. Her first came in her 15th start against Parkside. She was two walks shy of a perfect game in that contest while striking out seven. The second no-hitter happened just two starts later against Davenport. Irelan was three walks from a perfect game in that contest. The junior from Owosso, Michigan, set a career-high for strikeouts in a game against Findlay with 17, and has recorded double-digit strikeouts nine times this season. Her 10.5 strikeouts per seven innings mark leads the GLIAC and ranks fifth in NCAA Division II. She leads the conference in complete games (33rd NCAA), ERA (14th), hits allowed per seven innings (4th), shutouts (46th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (14th), strikeouts (14th), victories (48th), and WHIP (3rd).
2025 GLIAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Madelynn Pope, Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State freshman Madelynn Pope has been named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year. Pope become the ninth player in GVSU program history to earn GLIAC freshman of the year honors. Pope has appeared and started in 40 games this season and leads GVSU with a .365 batting average. She also leads the team with eight triples, .617 slugging percentage, and a 1.022 OPS. Pope has notched 42 hits with 25 runs batted in and 23 runs scored this season. In conference play, Pope hit .426 with a .439 on-base percentage and 1.217 OPS. She began conference play with six hits, two triples, and four runs scored in the opening doubleheader at Roosevelt. Pope drove in a season high four runs in wins against Purdue Northwest and Davenport including her first collegiate home run in the win at Purdue Northwest.
2025 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Ryan Schalk, Saginaw Valley State
Ryan Schalk earned GLIAC Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season after leading the Cardinals to back-to-back GLIAC regular season titles. This year’s championship was the first outright regular season title since 2009. Schalk led SVSU to the third-highest win total in program history with 40 wins. They are just two wins away from tying the second-most wins, a mark the team has hit twice before (2011 & 1999). Additionally, the team won the most conference games in program history with a 23-5 mark, the first 20-win season in conference play. Schalk has coached back-to-back GLIAC Pitchers of the Year with Macy Irelan this season and Emily Depew last season. Saginaw Valley State holds the top seed in the GLIAC Softball Tournament and is seeking its fourth-consecutive Tournament title in 2025. The Cardinals lead the GLIAC in batting average, doubles, ERA, hits, home runs, on-base percentage, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, strikeout-to-walk ratio, team strikeouts per seven innings, total runs, and WHIP. They are also top 25 in the country strikeout-to-walk ratio (11th), WHIP (11th), team strikeout per seven innings (13th), total runs (14th), RBI (16th), and scoring (17th).
