GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the 10th week of the 2024-25 men's basketball season. Wayne State sophomore guard Rob Lee Jr. was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Parkside sophomore guard Matas Castillo earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rob Lee Jr., Wayne State
Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday afternoon. Lee, Jr. averaged 29.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in Wayne State's two games last week while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. Starting with his 40-point performance on Thursday night at Northern Michigan, Lee, Jr. became the fourth player in program history and first since 2006 to score 40 points in a single game. The sophomore shot 12-of-18 from the field, 6-of-8 behind the arc and 10-of-10 at the free throw line. Lee, Jr. joined Marcus Tomashek as the league's only players to score 40 this season. The second-year Warrior followed up that outing with another team high on Saturday, 19 points at Michigan Tech.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Matas Castillo, Parkside
Matas Castillo has been selected as the GLIAC Defensive Player of the week after his performances in the Rangers victories over No. 4 Ferris State and No. 6 Lake Superior State. It’s Castillo’s first Player of the Week recognition and it comes after two stellar defensive performances. In Parkside’s win over Ferris State the Lemont, Ill. native had a game high three steals. Castillo’s play aided the Rangers to hold the Bulldogs to a conference play low of 66 points. In the Rangers win over Lake Superior State, Castillo would collect the steal that would lead to the game winning shot in the waning seconds.
