MTU's Fernholz and FSU's Bingham receive GLIAC men's basketball player of the week honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the ninth week of the 2024-25 men's basketball season. Michigan Tech freshman guard Ty Fernholz was selected as GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Ferris State junior forward Mykel Bingham earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ty Fernholz, Michigan Tech
Michigan Tech men’s basketball freshman guard Ty Fernholz has been named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for week Nine, the league announced Monday. This marks the fourth Offensive Player of the Week honors for the Huskies and the first of Fernholz’s young career. Fernholz, a native of Stoughton, Wisconsin, was vital in the Huskies earning its second GLIAC weekend sweep of the season with an 88-65 victory at Northern Michigan on Thursday and an 82-59 win at the SDC Gymnasium on Saturday. He steadily was the second-best scorer for the Black & Gold, averaging 19 points on 13-for-19 from the field (68.4 percent), including nine-for- 14 from 3-point land (64.3 percent), to go with 2.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 25.1 minutes a game. He paces the GLIAC with a 3-point percentage of 50.6 percent, tying the league high with 3.3 3- point makes per game.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mykel Bingham, Ferris State
Ferris State University junior forward Mykel Bingham had a big weekend for the fourth-ranked Bulldogs as FSU wrapped up a four-game homestand with back-to-back wins over West Michigan rivals Grand Valley State and Davenport at Wink Arena. Bingham totaled 24 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals as FSU moved to 16-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 atop the GLIAC. The junior forward netted 16 points and nine rebounds in Thursday’s 77-63 win over GVSU before coming back with eight points, 11 boards, four assists, two steals and a block on Saturday as FSU rallied for a 74-68 win against the Panthers. Bingham also shot 56% from the floor for the weekend and nailed three treys overall.
