GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the opening week of the 2024-25 men's basketball season. Michigan Tech senior guard Pete Calcaterra was selected GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Ferris State junior center Nathan Claerbaut secured GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Pete Calcaterra, Michigan Tech
The Boyne City, Michigan, native, helped Michigan Tech open the season 2-0 at the NCAA D2 Midwest Regional Tip-Off at the Justagame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. He was the leading scorer in the season-opening win against USML (72-57), scoring a career-high 23 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field (72.7 percent) while also going seven-of-nine from the charity stripe (77.8 percent), recording a team-leading nine rebounds. Calcaterra recorded his second 20-point game on Saturday, helping Michigan Tech outscore Maryville 47-37 in the second half for an 88-84 victory. His 20 points came on six-of-seven from the field (85.7 percent) and nine-of-13 from the free-throw line, with 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nathan Claerbaut, Ferris State
Ferris State University junior center Nathan Claerbaut had a big weekend for the #25 Bulldogs as FSU posted a pair of impressive victories to go 2-0 in the GLIAC/GMAC Crossover event held inside Jim Wink Arena. The 7-0 Claerbaut had back-to-back double-double showings for FSU in the two home wins. He notched 13 points with a game-high 11 rebounds, four blocked shots and steal on Friday night in Ferris State’s win over Northwood and then came back with 12 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three assists on Saturday in a 94-72 win over Lake Erie, which had beat GLIAC favorite Lake Superior State in their season opener on Friday evening. For the weekend, Claerbaut averaged 12.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks as FSU moved to 3-1 overall this year.
