GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 6 of the 2024 men's soccer season. Saginaw Valley State swept the awards, with redshirt senior forward receiving GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week recognition and fifth-year defender Francisco Capellan earning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jayden Cameron, Saginaw Valley State
Saginaw Valley State University redshirt senior, Jayden Cameron, was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals in two matches. Cameron netted the final in a 3-0 win against No. 13 St. Cloud State on Friday before tallying the game-winning-goal on Sunday in a 2-1 win against Northern Michigan. The latter came with only 8:12 remaining on the clock. He also assisted a goal against the Huskies to total five points this weekend. The Brampton, Ontario native recorded seven shots and four shots on goal as well.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Francisco Capellan, Saginaw Valley State
Saginaw Valley State University fifth year, Francisco Capellan, was named Defensive Player of the Week after making his Saginaw Valley debut. The transfer from Jacksonville University backed a defensive squad that shut out the No. 13 team in the nation allowing only five shots and one on goal, that shot being off a penalty kick. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native helped the defense hold the GLIAC leading shot takers in Northern Michigan to seven shots and two on goal. The Wildcats were averaging 15.5 shots per game and just under six shots on goal per game.
