AU's Swihart, GVSU's  O’Donnell Claim GLIAC Women's Soccer Weekly Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the eighth week of the 2019 women's soccer season. Ashland senior forward Deijah Swihart earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Grand Valley State junior defender Sydney O’Donnel claimed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Deijah Swihart - Ashland

Swihart scored three goals and had an assist as the Eagles went 2-0 on a trip to the Upper Peninsula to extend their winning streak to nine. She scored twice, including the opening goal in Ashland's 4-1 win over Michigan Tech on Friday. Swihart then assisted on AU's first goal against Northern Michigan on Sunday before adding her third goal of the week early in the second half. She now has eight goals on the season and 32 in her career. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sydney O’Donnel - Grand Valley State

Sydney O’Donnell earns her first GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after starting at outside back in another shutout 2-0 weekend for the Lakers. GVSU blanked Northwood, 3-0, in the second meeting of the season before a 7-0 win over then-conference leading Ferris State on Sunday. GVSU held the Bulldogs to just one shot on goal despite being a team with proven firepower that has scored 38 goals this season. O’Donnell had a goal and assist in the win Friday night, assisting on the game-winner in the first half before scoring the dagger late in regulation. GVSU has now pitched 10 consecutive shutouts including all six conference matches this season.
