GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following Week 6 of the 2018-19 outdoor track and field season. Ashland's Mackenzie Leigh, Travor Bassitt and Nik Zak claimed the women's field, men's track and men's field honors, respectively. Michigan Tech's Liz Bloch was named women's track athlete of the week.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Liz Bloch - Michigan Tech
Senior Liz Bloch (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) set a new school record with her 800-meter run at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays. She finished in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:10.36, breaking her previous mark of 2:11.02.She is ranked 15th nationally in the event. She won the 800 and placed seventh in the 1,500-meter run. Bloch is ranked seventh nationally in the event.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Mackenzie Leigh - Ashland
Senior Mackenzie Leigh (Buckhannon, W.V.) placed fourth in the women's hammer throw championship division Saturday at the Jesse Owens Relays at Ohio State. She had a provisional distance of 60.32 meters (197-11). Leigh is ranked second nationally in the event.
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Trevor Bassitt - Ashland
Sophomore Trevor Bassitt (Lima, Ohio) placed third in the men's 110-meter hurdles college open at the Jesse Owens Relays hosted by Ohio State. He finished with a time of :14.10. Bassitt is ranked second nationally in the 110 and first in the 400 hurdles.
MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Nik Zak - Ashland
Junior Nik Zak (Brunswick, Ohio) placed third in the shot put college open division at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Relays Saturday with an improved mark of 17.02 meters (55-10 1/4) and was fourth in the hammer throw Friday with a distance of 63.96 meters (209-10). His hammer throw was a personal record by two meters. Zak is ranked 12th nationally in the hammer throw.
