GVSU's Cabana and SVSU's Meredith named GLIAC women's basketball players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the seventh week of the 2024-25 women's basketball season. Grand Valley State senior guard Abrie Cabana was honored as GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Saginaw Valley State junior guard Lydia Meredith received GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Abrie Cabana, Grand Valley State
For the first time in her career, senior guard Abrie Cabana has been named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. In two games, Cabana scored 35 points on 11-19 shooting, making five threes, and going a perfect 8-8 from the line. In Tuesday’s game at Ohio State, Cabana led the Lakers with 14 points, shooting 4-8 from the field, and hitting two three-pointers. She added three assists and a steal. To end 2024, she tallied a career-high 21 points at Northwood. Cabana went 7-11 from the field, hitting three triples, to help lead GVSU to a 31-point victory at Northwood.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lydia Meredith, Saginaw Valley State
Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball junior guard Lydia Meredith was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) office on Monday. Meredith led the Cardinals defensively with 12 rebounds, six steals, and three blocks in their two wins prior to the holiday break. The six steals increases her lead in the GLIAC, averaging 2.7 steals per game. Meredith also scored 15 crucial points including 10 made free throws in a three-point win against Thomas More on Thursday. This is the first Player of the Week award for Meredith and the Cardinals this season. It is the third time Meredith has earned Defensive Player of the Week in her career after being honored twice last season.
