GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the seventh week of competition of the 2024-25 swimming & diving season. Selected for recognition were Saginaw Valley State senior Benjamin Wainman (men's swimming), Wayne State graduate student Barbara Munoz (women's swimming), Wayne State senior Julio Osuna (men's diving) and Wayne State sophomore Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru (women's diving).
MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Benjamin Wainman, Saginaw Valley State
Saginaw Valley State University senior Benjamin Wainman took first in the 500-yard and 1650-yard freestyles at the Davenport Invitational this weekend. The marks of 4:28.28 and 15:16.66 bested Wainman’s previous record times at SVSU. Wainman helped the team finish second, just 6.5 points behind Wayne State. Competing in three other events and placing third, sixth, and ninth. This is the third Athlete of the Week award for Saginaw Valley swim and dive in the 2024-25 season and the third for Wainman. It is the fourth in his career.
WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Barbara Munoz, Wayne State
Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia / Comfandi Yumbo) was named GLIAC Swimmer of the Week for the third time in her career and first time this season on Tuesday. Munoz won four events, three as an individual, at Davenport's Don Kimble Invitational. Munoz touched the wall first in the 200 fly (2:01.20), 200 free (1:50.15) and 400 IM (4:24.61). For her relay victory, the grad student swam the opening leg of the Warriors' first-place 400 free relay quartet that was clocked at 3:27.13. Munoz's week wasn't done there, though, as she was also fifth in the 1650 free (17:26.49) to go along with swimming the third leg of the 400 medley relay (second - 3:51.21) and first leg of the 800 free relay (second - 7:37.81).
MEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Julio Osuna,Wayne State
Julio Osuna (Tijuana, Mexico / Instituto Mexico [Indianapolis]) garnered GLIAC Diver of the Week honors for the second time this season on Tuesday. Osuna won both boards at Davenport's Don Kimble Invitational over the weekend. The senior turned in a score of 609.70 at one meter and 580.50 at three meters.
WOMEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru, Wayne State
Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) received GLIAC Diver of the Week distinction for the second instance this season on Tuesday. Wadsworth-Curcuru stood atop the podium for both boards at Davenport's Don Kimble Invitational over the weekend. The sophomore finished with a mark of 408.30 at one meter and 410.85 at three meters.
