GLIAC Spring 2022 Commissioner's Award Recipients Announced

GLIAC – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the recipients of the Spring 2022 Commissioner’s Awards, presented by Meijer, Inc. The awards are bestowed after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes of junior, senior or graduate student status that excel both in the classroom and in competition. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.
The six female student-athletes recipients are:

Ferris State University junior Alayna Eldred garnered all-region recognition this season for the Bulldogs in addition to being chosen as an All-GLIAC First Team recipient. Eldred earned all-league kudos for the second-straight year and was a scholar choice in addition to receiving GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team accolades. She led the Bulldogs to the school’s first NCAA postseason appearance in eight years this season and ranked among the league and region’s top performers. As an individual, she placed 13th overall at the GLIAC Championships held in Augusta, Mich., and her appearance in the NCAA East Regional Championships marked her second national trip in a row after she qualified individually in 2021. Eldred served as the Bulldogs’ captain this season and had multiple top 10 finishes over the course of the campaign.

First team All-America honors from both NFCA and D2CCA, the third Laker in program history to earn first team honors from both in the same season... Second team CoSIDA Academic All-American, consensus first team All-Region performer and first team All-GLIAC shortstop... Hit .465 for the season, the second-highest batting average in a single season in program history... Drove in a team-high 52 runs, scored 50 times, hit six home runs, 17 doubles and three triples for a team-best 120 total bases... Went 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts... Did not make an error in her final 18 games of the season... Had a 15-game hit streak snapped in final game of the season, in which she was on-deck when the final out was made... Enters her senior season 62 hits away and 23 runs scored away from the respective all-time career bests in GVSU history.

Rachel Griffin was named GLIAC Softball Player of the Year this spring becoming the first Panther to earn that award. She was also First Team All-GLIAC as well as First Team All-Region by D2CCA and Second Team All-Region by NFCA. This season she posted offensive numbers of a .370 batting average, 29 runs, 14 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 34 RBI and a .644 slugging percentage. She ranked fourth in the GLIAC in doubles, eighth in RBI, fifth in total bases (87), seventh in batting average, and fourth in slugging percentage. Griffin is the all-time leader at Davenport with 620 at-bats, 211 games played, and 204 games started.

Ferris State University senior centerfielder Paige Kortz earned 2022 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America laurels for the Bulldogs in addition to being a consensus All-Region choice on the field for the third-straight season. A first-team All-GLIAC choice this year, Kortz led the Bulldogs this season and ranked among the GLIAC leaders in numerous statistical categories after hitting .383 on the year. She produced 62 hits and drove in 40 runs in 51 games while notching a school single-season record 12 home runs in addition to seven doubles and two triples. She also posted a .673 slugging percentage and stole nine bases for FSU while scoring 45 total runs. This year marked the third season in her career in which Kortz garnered All-GLIAC First Team accolades. Ferris State concluded the 2022 campaign by reaching the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals and picked up the program's first postseason win since 2016.

Alona Olshevska had an outstanding season in both the indoor and outdoor campaigns for SVSU track & field. During the indoor season, the Wayne, Mich., native was named the GLIAC Track Athlete of the Meet at the GLIAC Indoor Championships, claiming the conference title in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. She went on to take home All-American honors in the same two events at the NCAA DII National Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, Olshevska was named the GLIAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and qualified in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes at the NCAA DII National Outdoor Championships. Recently, she was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the first time in her career. This season, Olshevska set four SVSU program records and has a career total of seven NCAA DII All-American awards.

Emma Richards showed her strength in the field this season earning two First Team All-American honors by placing fourth in shot put (15.37m) and fifth in discus (48.63m) at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Richards was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year and the 2022 GLIAC Outdoor Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. She won both the discus and shot put events at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships throwing 49.15m in the discus throw, and putting 14.81m in the women’s shot put event to earn her team 20 points. Richards had eight first-place finishes throughout the 2022 outdoor season including two at the DI Kennesaw State Invitational in shot put and discus. In the classroom, Richards achieved a cumulative 3.74 GPA and was awarded to the GLIAC Academic Excellence honors.

Charles DeLong had one the best seasons in GVSU program history. DeLong tied for seventh at the 2022 NCAA DII Championships carding 219 (+3). He earned Regional Medalist honors winning the Central/Midwest Regional Championships carding 215 (-1). He was also awarded NCAA DII Ping All-American and All-Region honors. DeLong finished fourth at the GLIAC Championships scoring one-under par (141). Throughout the 2021-22 season, he won four tournaments including a score of -9 (135) at the Motor City Invite. DeLong had eight top-five finishes, earned four GLIAC Athlete of the Week honors, and was named the GLIAC Player of the Year. He ended the season ranked sixth in all of DII. Academically, DeLong was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and received GLIAC Academic Excellence honors achieving a 3.78 cumulative GPA.

Karter Fitzpatrick was voted to the All-Region Second Team by the D2CCA, the NCBWA and the ABCA after a fantastic junior season for the Green & Gold. In addition, he was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team and earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District honors. The Monroe, Mich., native was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team. Fitzpatrick was selected GLIAC Pitcher of the Week on four occasions this past season. He led the GLIAC in wins (9) and ranked fifth in innings pitched (71.1), sixth in ERA (2.65), and ninth in strikeouts (56). Fitzpatrick went 9-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 12 starts and struck out 56 batters in 71 and 1/3 innings. He collected one complete game, while being a part of two combined shutouts and the opposition hit .255 against the right-hander. Academically, Fitzpatrick was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all six semesters at WSU.

Ferris State University senior standout Mathis Guerre closed out his collegiate career by being named to the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America squad, finishing the year ranked among the nation’s top 10 in the final ITA doubles rankings while becoming the school’s first men’s tennis performer to earn All-America honors since 2006. Guerre claimed All-GLIAC honors for the Bulldogs for the third time in his collegiate career after previously being tabbed the league’s Player of the Year in 2020-21. He led the Bulldogs to the program’s 25th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance this season as FSU compiled a 15-5 overall record. The Bulldogs also earned league runner-up honors and advanced to the regional tournament for the seventh consecutive year. Guerre closed his career as one of the school’s best players in history, helping FSU to multiple league regular season and postseason championships in his illustrious career.

Clayton Sayen earned All-Region honors in the 800 meters and 1500 meter events this spring and qualified for the 1500 national finals, where he placed 11th. Sayen was recently named USTFCCCA Second Team All-America (May 31) in the men's 1500 meters after turning in a time of 3:51.64 at the NCAA National Championships. Sayen became the 12th Michigan Tech men's track & field athlete to make an NCAA appearance and was the first to make the 12 athlete finals in the 1500 meter event. Earlier this spring, he won the 1500 meter GLIAC Championship in Allendale, Michigan, and set the conference record time. Sayen's impressive season began in fall cross country, where he won the Roy Griak Invitational 8K in St. Paul, Minnesota in September. He set his first 1500 meter provisional mark at the Raleigh Relays with a time of 3:45.84 and continued to improve in the lead-up to the NCAA Championships, also setting a provisional time and MTU school record in the 800 meters at the North Central College Carius-Gregory Invitational.

Isaiah Schafer turned in one of the best spring campaigns of any track and field student-athlete in the history of Davenport. He became an eight-time All-American by winning the shot put and placing sixth in the discus at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He set a personal best and had the eighth-best throw in NCAA Division II history in the shot put. He also accomplished the same feat during the indoor national championships in the shot put. He was named USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Field Athlete of the Year as well as GLIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Meet and Year. He is now a two-time CoSIDA Academic Second Team All-American. Schafer placed first in the discus and second in the shot put during the GLIAC Outdoor Championships.

Dom Spicer • Wayne State • Tennis • Junior • London, England • 3.59 GPA • Management

Dom Spicer was the No. 1 singles player on the Warrior squad which advanced to the national championship match. He was voted GLIAC Player of the Year as well as First Team All-GLIAC. Spicer was the recipient of the 2022 ITA Midwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. He compiled a 24-11 singles record, including wins over No. 1 ranked Alvaro Regalado of Columbus State in the national semifinals, and No. 2 Juan Ortiz Couder (Embry-Riddle) during spring break. A three-time GLIAC Player of the Week in 2022, Spicer was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the Midwest Region by the ITA, along with a No. 26 national ranking. In addition, he paired with Luke Laws to earn the No. 9 doubles ranking in the final ITA Midwest Regional rankings, along with a No. 35 national ranking. Academically, he has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) three times, including the Winter 2022 semester, while also being named to the Coach's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.0-3.49) the other three semesters.
