GLIAC Winter 2021-22 Commissioner's Award Recipients Announced

GLIAC – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the recipients of the Winter 2021-22 GLIAC Commissioner’s Awards. The awards are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes that excel both in the classroom and in competition. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.

A three-time All-GLIAC honoree, Ferris State University senior guard Adrienne Anderson led the Bulldogs to their first-ever conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in her final campaign along with the GLIAC North Division Championship. The veteran standout, who missed all of the 2020-21 season due to injury, returned to the FSU lineup and ranked among the Bulldogs’ statistical leaders in nearly every category, averaging 14 points along with four rebounds, four assists and 2.5 steals per game. Anderson posted 24 double-figure scoring games this year and totaled 20 points or more five times while also ranking as one of the country’s top defensive performers. The first-team All-GLIAC honoree also garnered GLIAC Defensive Team recognition and earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence honors for the fourth time in her collegiate career. She was chosen as the MVP of the GLIAC Tournament as the Bulldogs knocked off nationally second-ranked rival Grand Valley State in the final to win the event for the first time ever. Anderson closed her career as one of the school’s all-time bests, totaling more than 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals in 110 career contests.

Sam Cherney, a senior from Farmington Hills, Mich., earned the first-ever GLIAC Commissioner's Award by a Wayne State University women's basketball student athlete. Cherney, was voted to the All-GLIAC First Team for the second straight season along with being selected to the GLIAC All-Defensive Team for the third consecutive year. She ranked seventh nationally in total rebounds (326), ninth in rebounds per game (11.6), 17th in defensive rebounds per game (7.8), 18th in blocked shots per game (2.39), 19th in total blocks (67-which set a WSU single-season record), and 28th in offensive rebounds per game (3.8). A two-year team captain (2020-21 and 2021-22), Cherney became the third person (first female) with over 1,000 career rebounds in the 105 years of basketball at WSU. Academically, she will graduate next month with a 3.946 cumulative grade-point average in Chemical Engineering Honors. Cherney was named to the WSU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all seven semesters, including five 4.00 terms.

Jordan Fox, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, becomes the 13th member of the Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad to receive a GLIAC Commissioner's Award. She was a six-time All-American last month, including First Team in 500 Free (fifth); Honorable Mention in 200 Back (10th), 1000 Free (11th), 200 Free (11th), 800 Free Relay (10th) and 200 Medley Relay (15mth). Fox was a seven-time All-GLIAC performer (an individual can only compete in seven event) at the 2022 Championships as she won a GLIAC title in the 500 Free; finished second in the 200 Back, 1000 Free, 800 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay and 400 Medley Relay; and third in the 200 Free. In her two years of competing (did not compete in 2020-21), Fox is a 10-time All-American, including five First Team certificates (500 Free-twice, 200 Back, 400 Free Relay and 800 Free Relay) and has won five GLIAC titles (200 Free, 500 Free, 400 Free Relay, 400 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relay). She currently maintains a 3.71 cumulative GPA in Accounting.

Elli Kimes made her seventh NCAA DII Track and Field Championships appearance at the 2022 Indoor meet where she finished second with a height of 4.15m in pole vault. Kimes won her eighth GLIAC Championship at the 2022 GLIAC Indoor Championships clearing a height of 4.10m. She finished first amongst all college athletes during the regular season at all five meets, and achieved an NCAA DII provisional mark five times in the regular season. She finished the regular season ranked second in DII and first in the GLIAC. She is an eight time GLIAC pole vault champion, and earned her sixth USTFCCCA All-American First-Team honors in the 2022 indoor season. Kimes also earned her third straight winter GLIAC Commissioner's Award. Academically, Kimes fin
ished the Fall semester with a 3.84 gpa earning GLIAC Academic Excellence honors. She has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors every season since the Indoor 2018 season. She was named the NCAA Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field National Scholar Field Athlete of the Year in 2021.

Alyssa Nelson had one of the best seasons in program history for the Rangers. The junior from New Berlin, Wis. held a very impressive shooting line, averaging over 50% from the field, 40% on three-point field goals, and over 90% from the free throw line. Nelson averaged 20.2 points per game, 5.6 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists. She has also been named a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, the GLIAC Player of the Year, First Team All-GLIAC, and the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year. Nelson also had a successful academic year, as the Business Management major earned GLIAC Academic Excellence honors for the winter season.

Emily Spitzley helped lead the Lakers to the second most wins in program history with a 31-3 finish and with their 2021-22 season concluding in the NCAA DII Elite Eight Semifinals in Birmingham, Alabama. Spitzley was a First Team All-GLIAC honoree and was selected to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament Team after scoring a career high 28 points in the win over No. 5 Drury in the regional semifinals and defeating No. 18 Walsh in the regional championship. Spitzley was also named GLIAC Player of the Week after shooting 4-4 from three in the win over Michigan Tech, including the game-tying three at the buzzer to send the game into OT.
Spitzley is a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence recipient, two-time First Team All-GLIAC recipient, two-year starter, and two-year leading scorer for the Lakers, and has a career record of 102-16 (.864 winning percentage) as a player at GVSU. She was the leading scorer for the Lakers this season, scoring 456 and averaging 13.4 points per game. She shot a team high 41% from three and led the Lakers in threes made this season (68). Spitzley averaged 3.9 rebounds per game and finished the season with 34 assists, 31 steals, and blocked 12 shots.

Ferris State University senior forward Dorian Aluyi led the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Regular Season Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in his final campaign while garnering All-GLIAC accolades for the second time in his career. Aluyi started all 31 games for the Bulldogs, who went 22-9 overall, and posted 21 double-figure scoring games this season, helping FSU rank among the nation’s leaders at 87 points per contest. The senior standout ranked among the league leaders in several statistical categories, totaling 12.4 points along with 7.8 rebounds per game in addition to shooting nearly 50% from the floor. The three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree helped FSU to a pair of GLIAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament berths in his three years at Ferris State and was a key factor in this year’s run after missing nearly all of the 2020-21 campaign due to injury. The team captain was a three-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs and finished the season with 384 points, 241 rebounds, 70 assists and 26 steals.

Luka Cvetko, a junior on the Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team from Varazdin, Croatia, garnered his first GLIAC Commissioner's Award. He was a six-time All-American at the 2022 NCAA Championships (two First Team – 200 Free Relay/sixth and 50 Free/seventh; and four Honorable Mention – 100 Free/ninth; 400 Free Relay/11th; 200 Medley Relay/12th; and 400 Medley Relay/12th). At the 2022 GLIAC Championships, Cvetko was a five-time All-GLIAC honoree, including winning GLIAC titles in the 200 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay, while placing second in the 400 Free Relay, and third in both the 50 Free and 400 Medley Relay. He has been a 13-time All-American, including eight First Team honors (200 Free Relay-third/fifth/sixth; 400 Free Relay-fifth; 50 Free-seventh; 200 Medley Relay-seventh; 400 Medley Relay-seventh; and 100 Free-eighth). Cvetko, who has won nine GLIAC titles (50 Free-twice; 200 Free Relay-twice; 400 Free Relay-twice; 200 Medley Relay-twice; and 400 Medley Relay-once), maintains a 3.955 cumulative GPA in Computer Science.

Myles Kerner set a Grand Valley State record in the men's shot put at the GVSU Big Meet - Friday putting a distance of 19.29m. He finished fifth at the 2022 NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships putting 18.23m and added four points to the Men's National Championship victory.
Kerner also competed at Nationals in weight throw finishing ninth with a distance of 19.37m. He was awarded USTFCCCA First-Team All-American honors in shot put, and Second-Team All-American honors in weight throw. At the 2022 GLIAC Indoor Championships, he won the shot put event with a distance of 19.12m, and placed fourth in weight throw with a distance of 19.35m. He was named the 2022 GLIAC Field Athlete of the Meet, and was a two-time GLIAC Athlete of the Week in the 2022 indoor season. Kerner threw a personal-best distance of 19.90m in weight throw at the Bill Clinger Classic finishing first. He ended the regular season nationally ranked third in shot put and 10th in weight throw. In the classroom, Kerner has earned a cumulative 3.74 GPA and was awarded 2022 GLIAC Academic Excellence honors.

Mac Mitchell won his third consecutive GLIAC Championships in the men's triple jump at the 2022 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with a personal-best distance of 14.33m. He was awarded 2022 USTFCCCA All-Region honors for being within the top five in the Midwest Region. Mitchell placed second among all DII athletes at the GVSU Big Meet jumping 14.00m. He placed first amongst all GLIAC athletes at the GVSU Holiday Open reaching a distance of 13.92m. Mitchell also claimed first at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic with a distance of 13.63m. Academically, Mitchell has a cumulative 3.81 GPA and has earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence honors in 2022, 2021, and 2020. .

Stewart Nowinski • Wayne State • Swimming & Diving • Senior • Macomb, Mich. • 3.60 GPA • Dietetics

Stewart Nowinski, a senior from Macomb, Mich., becomes the 12th member of the Wayne State University men's swimming and diving squad to receive a GLIAC Commissioner's Award. He was a two-time All-American at the 2022 NCAA Championships last month (one First Team Relay and one Honorable Mention Relay). Nowinski was part of the sixth-place 200 free relay team and the 11th-place 400 free relay. Despite battling injuries, he earned All-GLIAC honors after finishing first with the 200 free relay team, while claiming fourth in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 free. Nowinski was a six-time All-American in his collegiate career (three First Team for 200 Free Relay, two First Team for 400 Free Relay; and one Honorable Mention for 400 Free Relay). He won four GLIAC titles (three in the 200 Free Relay and one in the 400 Free Relay) and finished in the top eight at GLIACs in 10 career events (50 Free-four times; 200 Free Relay-four times; 400 Free Relay-once; and 100 Free-once). Nowinski maintains a 3.60 cumulative GPA in Dietetics.

Michigan Tech combo guard Owen White (Rhinelander, Wisconsin) has been selected for the GLIAC Commissioner's Award for the 2021-22 season. White finished the year ranked 12th on MTU's all-time career points scored chart with 1,542 points. He also ranks 11th in career free throw percentage (.816). This season, White was named NABC First Team All-District, D2CCA First Team All-Region, and GLIAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was also All-GLIAC First Team, GLIAC All-Tournament Team, and All-GLIAC Defensive Team. He earned GLIAC Player of the Week twice this season and started all 28 games for the Huskies. He finished fourth in the conference and led the team with 17.6 points per game with three double-doubles. He posted a season-high 13 rebounds at Purdue Northwest on Feb. 3 and marked 25 games with 10 or more points, including a season-high 30-point performance on March 5 against Northern Michigan in the GLIAC Semifinals. White was on the GLIAC Academic Excellence Team this year. In 2020-21, he was an NABC All-American and First Team All-Midwest District selection. He was also named CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team and the GLIAC in scoring at 21.2 points per game.
