GV's Kinney and Murphy Chosen As GLIAC Women's Indoor Track and Field "Athletes of the Week," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University sophomore Monica Kinney (Walker, Mich./West Catholic) and freshman Liz Murphy (Washington, Mich./Romeo) were named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's indoor track and field "Athletes of the Week," respectively.

Monica Kinney - Grand Valley State
Sophomore, Mid Distance
Walker, Mich./West Catholic
Sophomore runner Monica Kinney (Walker, Mich.) took home first place in the women’s 3000-meter run last Friday (Jan. 15) at the Mike Lints Alumni Open with a time of 9:50.24, defeating the 2nd place finisher by nearly 10 seconds. The performance ranks #2 all time for GVSU in the indoor 3000 meters.

Liz Murphy - Grand Valley State
Freshman, Throws
Washington, Mich./Romeo
Freshman Liz Murphy (Washington, Mich.) placed second, first overall among collegiate athletes at the Mike Lints Alumni Open last Friday (Jan. 15). Her throw of 58’10" (17.93m) in the weight throw hit the NCAA provisional mark for the first time this year. The throw currently ranks Liz 3rd in NCAA Division II.

The Eagles compete next at the Northwest Ohio Invitational held on the campus of the University of Findlay on Friday, January 22.
Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field squad opened second semester action by taking part in the Doug Hanson Open hosted by Saginaw Valley State University on Friday (Jan. 15) evening. The non-scoring event was held inside SVSU’s Ryder Center and included student-athletes from FSU, SVSU, Northwood, Cornerstone, Aquinas and others. Freshman Alyssa Osika was a double-winner for the Bulldogs as she won the women’s mile run (5:11.65) with freshman teammate Shelby Janutol placing second (5:13.46) in the same event for the Bulldog women. The duo also finished first and second, respectively, in the 3,000 meters as Osika was victorious in 10:57.89 and Janutol took runner-up laurels in 10:59.21. FSU senior Emily Cross took third place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.48), Andrea Fogle came in third overall in the weight throw (12.95m), freshman Zoey Holmann was fourth overall in the 400 meters (1:01.86), Megan Josey placed fourth in the 3,000 meters (11:19.13) and Sarah Creed came in fifth in the 3,000 meters (11:24.58). Ferris State returns to action by taking part in the Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open, which will be held on Friday, Jan. 22, inside the Laker Turf Building at Allendale, Mich.
Findlay Oilers
The University of Findlay men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams completed the first Friday Night Series of the year on Friday, January 15 in Ada, Ohio. The women’s squad finished second with 171 total points. On the women’s side, Lindsey Schmitmeyer captured first place in the 400-meter dash at 1:01.27 and also took home the top finish in the 1000-meter run after crossing the finish line in 3:08.02.Stephanie Charnigo added a top finish in the 500-meter at 1:16.76, Catherine Wiemers was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.87, Danae Rockwell won the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 9.41 and Ashley Jennings was victorious in the weight throw with a toss of 49’09.75. Charnigo added a second place finish in the 200-meter dash (26.88), Erin Calvelage was the runner-up in the 1-mile run (5:37.78), Erin Wright captured the silver in the long jump (16’01.00) and Randi Depp took second in the weight throw with a mark of 49’03.50.
Grand Valley State Lakers
Grand Valley State’s women’s track and field team competed at the Mike Lints Alumni Open on Friday (Jan. 15). The Lakers took home five first place finishes. In the field events, Maegan Doyen (Manistee, Mich.) jumped 5’07.75" to claim first place in the high jump, setting a new Laker Turf Building record. Lauren Buresh (Stanwood, Mich.) added a first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 45’09.25", followed by teammate Sam Lockhart (Lansing, Mich.) with a throw of 44’08.25". Both Buresh and Lockhart hit the NCAA provisional mark. Jocelyn Kuksa (Palatine, Ill.) placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 12’3.50", while Christi Kettelhut (Rockford, Mich.) finished third with a jump of 11’9.75". Kuksa and Kettelhut both hit the NCAA provisional mark. In the running events, Monica Kinney (Walker, Mich.) took home a first place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:50.24. Candice Wheat (Pontiac, Mich.) hit the provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.73 seconds to take first place.Chanelle Caldwell (Toledo, Ohio) hit the provisional mark in the 400-meter dash as she placed second with a time of 56.90 seconds. The Lakers will be back in action Friday, Jan. 22 as they host the Bob Eubanks Open starting at 4:00 p.m.
Hillsdale Chargers
Five different Chargers picked up second-place finishes at the meet. No team scores were listed in the final results. Freshmen Cathryn Humphries and Kayla Caldwell took two of those second places, Humphries in the 60 meter dash (7.89 seconds) and Caldwell in the pole vault (3.7 meters). Sophomore Jennifer Shaffer took second place in the 800 meter run, finishing with a time of 2:17.71. Shaffer was one of three Hillsdale runners to place among the top six overall in that event. Gwen Buchhop was second in the weight throw with a toss of 13.54 meters, while senior Erin Cvengros was second in the 3000 meter run. Senior Jazmin Williams took third in the 400 (58.23)
Lake Superior State Lakers
Junior Jill Walton (Kingsley, Mich.) placed first with a toss of 12.77 meters, and teammate Laura Lindsey was second with an 11.42m throw in the women’s shot put to lead the Laker women at the 2010 Lake State Classic held Jan. 17 at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center. Walton also placed third in the weight throw with a school-record distance of 14.60m. After finishing third during the preliminaries, LSSU’s Amber Fater won the women’s 55-meter hurdles in a school-record shattering :08.97. Sophomore Katie Winiarski (Brighton, Mich.) was first in the high jump (1.60m). Senior Stacey Leyder (Newaygo, Mich.) won the women’s 5K in 20:52.01, followed by sophomore Kayla Nowak (Alpena, Mich.) in 21:26.85. LSSU competes at Northern Michigan on Jan. 23.
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team will host its lone home event of the season Saturday (Jan. 23) with the Northern Challenge. The past Saturday the team competed at the Lake State Classic. Picking up wins for the Wildcats were Brittnee Balbierz in the 55-meter dash (7.59), Catherine Angeli in the 200 (27.16), Kristen Schulz in the 3,000 (11:09.86) and the NMU “C” relay in the 4x400 (Bailey Franklin, Becky Rotter, Colby West and Rachael Williams) with a time of 4:21.72.
Northwood Timberwolves
The Northwood University women’s track and field team took part in a pair of events Friday and Saturday (January 15-16). NU started the weekend by competing at the Doug Hanson Open Friday night, which was hosted by Saginaw Valley State. Then on Saturday the Timberwolves traveled to the Lake State Classic in Sault Ste. Marie. Only a pair of women competed at Saginaw Valley State, but they performed well. Kristin Cameron (Algonac, Mich.) earned a pair of wins, taking home first in the shot put (40-4) and the weight throw (51-2). Julie Mason (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) finished third in the shot put (33-2). At Lake State, Cameron earned her third victory of the weekend, winning the weight throw for the second straight day with a toss of 56-3. That throw is a new school record, breaking her old mark from a year ago. Kayti Simonson (Calgary, Alberta/College Senior) won the 400 with a time of 1:00.81. Hannah Stone (Lapeer, Mich./East) also earned a win, taking home the 1,600 (5:30.92).
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University women’s track team had several solid performances at the Doug Hanson Open, held at the Ryder Center on the campus of SVSU. The women’s team had two first place finishes, the first coming from senior Amanda Roache (Mt. Morris, Mich./Mt. Morris HS) who finished the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:56.19. The next first place earned was in the high jump from junior Tiffany Norton (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth HS) who leaped a height of 1.57 meters. Earning respectable second place finishes were sophomores Megan Pittoors (Macomb, Mich./Dakota HS), Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS), and Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS). Pittoors earned her second place finish in the 5,000-meter run, timing in at 19:33.17, while Brooks earned hers in the 400-meter run crossing the line with a time of 1:01.36. Meyer took second in the 800-meter run with a final time of 2:26.17. Earning second and third place finishes in the pole vault (3.50 meters) and long jump (1.57 meters) was sophomore transfer Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS).
Tiffin Dragons
Tiffin University returns to action when the travel to GVSU for the Bob Eubanks Open on Friday, January 22.
