Saginaw Valley State's Nick Ekel Named GLIAC Men's Cross Country "Runner of the Week"
BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University sophomore Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's cross country "Runner of the Week."

Sophomore Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich. / Ovid-Elsie HS) placed third overall at the Cardinal Invitational crossing the line with a final time of 25:41. Ekel led a group of three other runners into the top 20 while facing some tough competition from schools such as Michigan State University and Wayne State University.

Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University men’s cross country team ran to a top-five place team finish on Saturday (Sept. 26) at the Division II Pre-National Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.On the men’s side, the Bulldogs were paced by sophomore Tyler Crossman’s 16th-place effort (26:37.21). Senior Curtis Begley was 17th (26:37.34), junior Alex Best captured 30th place (27:18.64), sophomore Steve Neshkoff took 31st place (27:19.65), freshman Ryan Chute placed 45th (27:50.52), senior Brian Reynolds took 48th place (27:58.54) and freshman Josh Kyser was 55th (28:14.12). Junior Derek Childs wound up 66th (28:48.80) in the field of 99 men’s runners. The men’s individual winner was Daniel Kirwa of Harding in a time of 24:35.53 on the 8K course.The Bulldogs (134) placed in the top five and sent selected runners to the SVSU Cardinal Invitational this past Friday (Sept. 25) but did not figure in the team scoring. The Bulldog men’s and women’s cross country teams are next tentatively slated to take part in the Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Open on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Kenosha, Wis.
The Oilers were idle this week and will compete again Friday, October 2 when they travel to the Ohio Wesleyan for the All-Ohio Championship Meet.
Grand Valley State Lakers
The Lakers were idle this week and will compete again Friday, October 2 when they travel to the South Bend, Indiana for the Notre Dame Invitational.

Lake Superior State Lakers
Freshman Jeffery Kuhl (Clarkston, Mich.) finished 15th at the Cardinal Invitational with a time of 25:41.5 to lead the Lakers at the Cardinal Invitational, which was run on the 2009 GLIAC Championship course. Junior Lucas Pease (Bellevue, Mich.) was 29th in 27:32.0, while junior Sean Vardy (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) was 33rd in 28:37.9. It was LSSU’s first 8K event of the season. The Lakers will run at the U.P. Championships in Marquette on Oct. 9.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
The men’s cross country team will enjoy a weekend off after taking part in the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday. Junior Brian Stetter posted his fourth straight top-10 performance of the season after finishing 10th. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:17. The men’s team finished eighth out of 20 teams.
The Northwood University men’s cross country team took part in the SVSU Cardinal Invite Friday afternoon (September 25). Saginaw Valley State will also serve as the host for the upcoming GLIAC Championships, which will take place October 24. The Timberwolves placed sixth overall at the event, finishing with a team score of 166. Michigan State took home first in the men’s event with 45 points, followed by Wayne State with 51. Greg Foley (South Lyon, Mich.) was the Timberwolves’ top finisher, clocking a time of 27:54.6. Sam Watson (Rochester, Mich.) ran a 28:34.9 in his first event of the season. Northwood will compete at the Michigan Intercollegiates October 9.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University men’s cross country team competed at home today (Sept. 25), hosting the Cardinal Invitational. The Cardinals competed extremely well, finishing tied for second with a very competitive Wayne State University. Leading the pack for the Cards was sophomore Nick Ekel, who crossed the line with a time of 25:41, placing him third overall. Immediately following Ekel were seniors Derek Stone (25:47) and Cortland Seaver (25:55), finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Rounding out the Cardinals’ top five were freshman Tyler Noble and sophomore Derek Welmers, who timed in at 26:49 and 26:58, respectively. Saginaw Valley will compete again next weekend at 11am on Saturday (Oct. 3) at the Loyola Invitational held in Chicago, Illinois.

Wayne State Warriors
After a week off, the Wayne State men’s cross country team competed at the SVSU-Cardinal Invitational this past Friday and finished in second place, just six points behind Michigan State. Kevind deBear (7th—26:02.9), Charlie Cavell (9th—26:09.6) and Alex Townsend (10th—26:25.8) all finished in the top-10 while Pat Webster (12th—26:27.0) and Travis Barczak (13th—26:39.1) also had top-15 performances. In four races this year, the Warriors have finished no worse than second place. Members of the WSU cross country team will be competing at either the Lehigh Paul Short run or the Slippery Rock invitational this week.
