BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards after the eighth weekend of the regular season. Saginaw Valley junior forward Matt Wilson earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season, while Northwood freshman defender Josh Wates claimed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Matt Wilson, Saginaw Valley
Saginaw Valley junior forward Matt Wilson had a huge weekend for the GLIAC leaders, scoring a pair of goals and adding a trio of assists in victories over Lake Erie and Walsh. Wilson had a goal and three assists in SVSU's 4-2 win over the Storm on Friday and followed that up with the team's game-winning goal on Sunday in double-overtime over the Cavaliers. Wilson currently leads the league in goals (12), assists (10) and points (34).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Josh Wates, Northwood
Northwood freshman defender Josh Wates played all 180 minutes on the back line for the NU defense that allowed one goal in two games, leading Northwood to a pair of key GLIAC wins. Wates and his squad started the week with a 2-1 win over Walsh allowing only two shots on net. The Timberwolves then earned a 1-0 shutout victory limiting Lake Erie to just four shots on target.
