SVSU's Nate Kelly Named GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week"
BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University senior Nate Kelly (Sutton's Bay, Mich.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after claiming medalist honors at the the 2010 Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament in a playoff over the weekend.

Nate Kelly - Saginaw Valley State University
(SR, Sutton's Bay, Mich.)
Senior Nate Kelly claimed medalist honors for the second time this season after winning the 2010 Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament, held at the Mohawk Golf and Country Club in Tiffin, Ohio. Kelly carded rounds of 72-69 to finish tied for the lead at -3. Kelly would claim the victory on the first playoff hole over Ashland’s Jay Overy. Kelly finished with a 72.45 stroke average for the fall.
Ashland - The Eagles wrapped up the fall season with a trip to Tiffin, where they finished in a tie for second in a 10-team field. Wayne State won the event (584/+8) with AU and Tiffin finishing in a tie for second. Both schools shot 591 (+15). Junior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) had AU’s top finish – he was second – shooting 141 (-3). Overy finished regulation tied with Saginaw Valley State’s Nate Kelly. Senior Ted Brink (Rocky River, Ohio) ended the tournament in a tie for second place (147/+3) and sophomore Mark Scott, Jr. (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) finished in a tie for 14th. Scott’s score was 149 (+5).
Ferris State - Ferris State turned in a fourth-place two-round 595 team score (+19) at the Tiffin (Ohio) Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament (Oct. 9-10) which was held on the par 72, 6,675-yard Mohwawk Golf and Country Club. The Bulldogs registered rounds of 292 and 303, respectively. Senior Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle) led the Bulldogs by firing a fourth-place tying even par 144 score (70-74=144). Junior Ian Straayer (Caledonia/Grandville) placed in a five-way tie for 20th-place honors as a result of carding a 151-stroke total (79-72=151, +7). The Bulldogs will be competing in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Invitational II Tournament this weekend (Oct. 18-19) in St. Louis, Mo.
Findlay - The University of Findlay men’s golf team placed sixth at the Tiffin University Invitational on Sunday, October 10 in Tiffin, Ohio. The Oilers carded a 606 during the tournament, shooting a 301 in the first round and a 305 in the second... Matt Jones placed 12th to lead the Oilers with a 148 (72, 76) while Marcus Hunt (72, 77 –149) finished 14th... Jeff Mocini (76, 76 – 152), Joe McGeean (79, 74 – 153), Kyle Nickson (76, 79 – 155), Michael Schmitmeyer (77, 79 – 156), Justin Watren (76, 80 – 156) and Logan Cooke (78, 80 – 158) also competed for Findlay at the event.

Lake Erie Storm - Junior Matt Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) finished tied for 27th with a two-round total of 77-76-153 (+9) to lead the Lake Erie College men's golf team at the Tiffin University Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament on Sunday (Oct. 10)... The Storm finished 10th of 10 teams at the event with a total team score of 643. Wayne State University took the team title at 584, seven shots ahead of host Tiffin and Ashland University... In addition to Hennessey, sophomore Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) tied for 35th at 80-75-155 (+11). Classmate Troy Hunter (Aurora, Ohio/Crestwood) finished at 85-80-165 and in 70th place while freshman Tyler Walters (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal), playing is his first intercollegiate event, carded an 83-87-170... The Storm has a quick turnaround, playing in Monday's (Oct. 11) Gannon University Fall Invitational in Erie, Pa.
Lake Superior State - Sophomore Brent Vizina (Indian River, Mich.) shot a 74-73—147 to finish 3-over and tie for 10th place at the Kyle Ryman Memorial hosted by Tiffin. Vizina is ranked second on the team in scoring average at 79.5. His brother, Brandon, a freshman, is ranked first at 79.0. Brandon tied for 35th with a 76-79—155. The Lakers closed out their fall season by placing ninth among 10 teams.
Northern Michigan - Fall season complete.
Northwood - The Northwood University men's golf team finished eighth at the Kyle Ryman Invitational, hosted by Tiffin Sunday afternoon (October 10)... The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Mohawk Golf & Country Club. The course played as a par 72 at 6,675 yards... The Timberwolves carded rounds of 301 and 307 to finish at 608. Wayne State was the overall winner at 584, followed by Ashland and Tiffin at 591... Sophomore Blair Turner (Midland, Mich.) led the way for Northwood. He finished at one-over par for the event, carding rounds of 70 and 75, good for a tie for seventh overall. Grant Peffer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) placed 19th with a total of 150 (77-73)... Northwood has now completed the fall portion of their schedule.
Ohio Dominican Panthers - Led by a 2-over 146 from Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, Ohio), Ohio Dominican’s men’s golf team wrapped up its fall season with a seventh place showing at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament, played Saturday and Sunday at Mohawk Country Club... The Panthers finished with a two-day score of 607, just four shots behind Saginaw Valley State for a top-five finish. Wayne State won the team title with a 584, and Nate Kelly of Saginaw took medalist honors with his 3-under 141... Hartoin went 74-72 to finish in ninth out of 82 golfers. Alex Nikias (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished in a tie for 20th with his two-day total of 151, and Gary Wright (Warsaw, Ohio) was in a tie for 27th with his 153 after firing a 73 on Sunday. Tyler Sebert (Grove City, Ohio) rounded out the ODU scoring with a 157, good for 44th...ODU’s season will resume in the spring. Stay posted to panthers.ohiodominican.edu for the full spring schedule.
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University golf team finished in fifth place at the 2010 Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament, hosted by Tiffin University at the Par-72, 6,675 yard Mohawk Golf and Country Club...the Cardinals followed a first round 303 with a second round 300 to finish with a 603 (+27). Wayne State University won the tournament with a +8 (584) total for the 36 hole event...senior Nate Kelly (Suttons Bay, Mich.) claimed medalist honors at the tournament, his second win of the fall season. He defeated Ashland’s Jay Overy after the first playoff hole. Kelly carded rounds of 72-69 to finish -3 in the event. Sophomore Dan Warner (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) finished 14th overall, finishing +5 after shooting rounds of 75-74. Junior Troy Quenneville (Tecumseh, Ont.) and sophomore Dustin Vogl each shot +13 to tie for 45th in the tournament...the tournament concludes the 2010 fall season for SVSU, as it will go on its annual spring trip on March 5th before competing in its first event of the spring at the 2010 Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational on March 26-27.
Tiffin - Tiffin University competed at the 10-team Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament at Mohawk Golf Club, tying with Ashland for second overall with totals of 591. Wayne State won the overall tourney with a 581... The Dragons trailed Ashland 289-294 after round one, but turned it around on day two, firing a 297 while the Eagles fell off to 302... Dillon Klein finished fourth overall, shooting 74 on day one and improving to 70 on day two for a 144 total. James Bell and Jason Crow had identical scores of 149, with Crow improving from 76 to 73 in two rounds. Bell opened with a team best 72 on day one but fell to 77 in round two... Tiffin’s final two varsity performers had up-and-down rounds, with Blake DeBruyn tying Bell with a strong opening-round 72 but falling off badly on day two with an 83 for 155 total. Andy Kronander did the opposite, opening with an 82 but paring it down to a 77 on day two for a 159 total... Other TU top performers included Justin Epure with 151, Tom Conway with 153, Louis Elbert with 157, and Phil Patten with 163.
Wayne State - In the penultimate event of the fall season, Wayne State finished in first place out of 10 teams at the Tiffin University Kyle Ryman Memorial. WSU posted the best team score of the tournament with a first-round 283, and followed up with a 301 in the second round for a combined score of 584, seven strokes ahead of Ashland University and the host Dragons (591). Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) carded a 142, including an opening-round 68, to finish third. He was one of three players under par for the weekend. Josh Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) was one of three players to tie for fourth with an even-par 144 (73-71). Steve Fedewa (Howell, Mich.) finished a stroke back in a tie for seventh (70-75—145). On Monday, the Warriors wrapped up the fall season with a team victory at the Gannon Invitational. Wayne State turned in a team score of 298, 11 strokes ahead of the host Golden Knights (309). Fedewa earned medalist honors with a two-under 70. He led all players with five birdies on Monday.
