2017-18 GLIAC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll

2017-18 Overview

Hoops season is right around the corner and the results are in for the 2017-18 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll along with the All-GLIAC Preseason Awards as voted on by the league's coaches. The Ferris State Bulldogs are the favorite in the North Division with the Ashland Eagles holding court in the South Division.

The defending GLIAC champions Ferris State are coming off a record-setting 28 wins last season which included their third straight GLIAC Tournament title. The Bulldogs are seeking their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017-18 and will be led by last year's GLIAC Player of the Year and the 2017-18 GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year in junior center Zach Hankins.

Ashland is coming off a 19-win season and its first-ever appearance in the GLIAC Tournament championship in a tightly-contested battle with Ferris State. The Eagles welcome back senior forward Wendell David from injury which caused him to miss last season, while junior point guard Ben Haraway and senior forward Marsalis Hamilton have AU's expectations set high.

Lake Superior State sits No. 2 in the preseason North Division balloting as the Lakers return senior guard Akaemji Williams and his 21.5 points per contest, including a league-best 7.9 assists per game. The third spot in the division goes to Michigan Tech as the Huskies will rely on junior forward Kyle Monroe who led MTU in scoring at a 20.1 points per game clip along with the reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year Tommy Lucca and senior forward A.J. Grazulis.

In the South Division, Wayne State is positioned second as the Warriors are on the rise and return four experienced seniors, including All-GLIAC First Team selection Chuck Key. Ronald Booth and Marcus Moore will provide the Warriors with the offensive firepower needed to contend. Saginaw Valley was voted No. 3 in the division as the Cardinals have to rebuild with a roster featuring four players who saw action last season.

Rounding out the GLIAC North are No. 4 Grand Valley State, No. 5 Northern Michigan and No. 6 Purdue Northwest, while the South Division finishes with No. 4 Davenport, No. 5 Northwood and No. 6 Tiffin.
