TIFFIN, Ohio - GO GREEN TIFFIN is a community engagement project with the goal of educating the community about the importance of recycling and informing community members where they can take their recyclables. The project has been put together by Tiffin University Athletic Department in coordination with OSS Joint Solid Waste District and Tiffin Parks and Recreation.
There were two recycling locations-one downtown near the food/beverage vendors and one in Hedges Boyer Park in the Historic Village. Each location was set up with a folder of instructions for the day, a schedule of all the teams working, a tent, GO GREEN TIFFIN banners, cardboard collection bins, plastic, glass & aluminum collection stands and educational boards about the importance of recycling.
Each student was wearing their GO GREEN TIFFIN t-shirts they received at Student-Athlete Orientation. Their responsibilities included pushing a cardboard collection cart, walking around and emptying recycling bags placed throughout downtown/park, taking the recycling to the Tiffin Park and Recreation recycling location, among several other small duties per Heritage Festival requests.
The football team and the men's soccer team not only helped with GO GREEN TIFFIN tent tear down, but they also helped the people at the Heritage Festival with other Heritage Festival clean-up and tear down.
Overall Tiffin University was seen in a positive light in the Tiffin Community, student athlete participation and involvement was high, and a total of three vans of recycling material was collected. Future events will continue this year-long initiative in Tiffin.
