Northwood Tabbed as Preseason Favorite by GLIAC Football Coaches
UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI -- The head football coaches of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) chose Northwood University as the favorite to win the league’s 2000 title.
     Northwood, the league’s preseason favorite for the first time in school history, edged out Grand Valley State University by nine points in the voting (114-105) while each of the teams garnered five first-place votes.
     The poll was released in conjunction with the league’s football media day luncheon held on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. The league's 12 head coaches participated in the ballotting, but were not allowed to vote for their teams. The first-place team on each ballot received 11 points, while second received 10 points, etc.

GLIAC Commissioner Tom Brown

 Ferris State University finished third in the balloting with 91 points, followed by Ashland University in fourth (90) and Northern Michigan in fifth (86). Ferris State and Northern Michigan each received one first-place vote.
     Northwood and Ferris State shared the conference title last season, each team posting a 7-2 GLIAC record. Northwood finished with an 8-2 overall record while Ferris State finished with a 7-3 mark.
     The title was the first for Northwood since 1976, while coach Pat Riepma garnered his third GLIAC “Coach of the Year” Award in the last four seasons. Ferris State has won outright or a share of six of the last eight conference crowns.
     The University of Indianapolis finished in sixth place with 78 points, followed by Hillsdale College (63), Michigan Technological University (48), and Saginaw Valley (45). Mercyhurst College (33), the University of Findlay (26), and Wayne State University (13) round out the poll.
